Impeachment of a president requires the body of congress to determine whether a president has committed crimes equaling misdemeanors or above. The house is in charge of bringing impeachment articles and deciding if there is enough evidence to hold over for consideration, which is done in the Senate.
The senate decides whether or not the evidence warrants removal of a president, but does not decide on actual criminal charges, which can only be adjudicated in court.
A president has immunity for any actions taken that is considered part of his or her official duties.
